A 3-day climate change workshop has kicked off in Umuahia with a firm promise by the Abia State government to ensure that partnerships that will drive the socio-political and economic development of the state is given attention.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Environment, Mr Philemon Ogbonna, highlighted the Abia State government’s commitment led by Governor Alex Otti, to address ecological concerns and mitigate climate change impacts.
He explained that the government has made significant progress in climate action, including preparing Nigeria’s first Biennial Transparency Report, adding that these efforts have earned Abia State a ranking of 8th among 36 states in climate change efforts.
Ogbonna urged all participants at the workshop to collaborate with the state government to meet net-zero targets and achieve Sustainable Development Goals .
On his part, the Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Mr. Kingsley Anosike insisted that the present administration under Governor Alex Otti, means business and is out to implement programs and policies that will impact positively on the living standards of the people.
He challenged the participants to align with the new Abia’s first mantra and shun personal interests.
Contributing, the Senior Special Assistant to the governor on intervention and strategy, The Rev Fr Anokwuru, described the program as mouthwatering and reiterated the commitment of the state to accountability and diligent service.
Also speaking, the National Co-ordinator of the UNDP GEF SGP, Mrs. Ibironke Olubamise, explained that the program provides grants, technical, and co-ordination support to poor, marginalized, and vulnerable communities through national civil society organizations (CSOs).
She stated that this is the first time the state is keying into the process and commended the openness and passion of the state towards the program.
Correspondent reports that the Senior Special Assistant to the governor on Environment Prof. Ijeoma Iheukwumere, SSA on Policy and Interventions, SAs on Disabilities, Mr. David Anyamele, Budget and Planning, Mr. Eric Egwuibe, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Mr. Ikechukwu Chidozie Oriuwa
among others were present on the day one of the workshop.
