The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Abia State has held a lecture on “Managing Environmental Risks for a Resilient and Sustainable Future” as part of activities marking the 2026 International Civil Defence Day.
During the lecture, deputy Commandant Onuegbu, Head of the Disaster Management Unit, emphasised the growing threats posed by environmental hazards like flooding, erosion, and pollution, stressing the need for proactive risk assessment and community participation in mitigating these challenges.
”The NSCDC plays a critical role in disaster response co-ordination, enforcing environmental protection laws, and promoting public awareness on environmental responsibility,” according to Onuegbu.
According to the Public Relations Officer NSCDC, Abia State Command, ASC I Doreen Udugwu, the lecture aimed to equip officers with the necessary knowledge on disaster management, under the leadership of State Commandant Akinsola Aderemi.
