Governor Alex Otti of Abia State on Wednesday joined distinguished scholars and educationists at the 24th Annual Lecture/Symposium of the Fafunwa Educational Foundation and the 19th Annual Post-Doctoral Awards in Education, held at the AGIP Recital Hall, MUSON Centre, Lagos.
Otti, in a post on his X handle, said the event provided an opportunity to reflect on the enduring legacy of Prof. Aliu Babatunde Fafunwa, whom he described as a father, hero, man of ideas, dreamer and pathfinder who firmly believed in the power of education to transform lives and societies.
According to him, Fafunwa’s life reminds us that true greatness is measured not by material possessions, but by the impact we make and the memories that outlive us.
He commended the Foundation, the family of the late professor, his protégés and students for keeping his ideals of integrity, curiosity, generosity and service alive.
Otti noted that this year’s focus on using mother tongues as the primary language of instruction in early education is timely, citing experiences from South Korea, India and China, and expressed hope that deliberations would influence future policy.
He congratulated winners of the post-doctoral awards, urging them to see the honour as a call to more work, and also celebrated Prof. Okey Ndibe on his new work, _Babs Fafunwa: A Mini-Biography for Youngsters_, which will introduce young Nigerians to Fafunwa’s legacy.
