The Abia State Ministry of Environment has warned against illegal activities in government forest reserves across the state, calling on host communities to support efforts to protect the vital natural resources.
Speaking to journalists after the arrest of individuals allegedly involved in illegal tree felling at the Ukpom Bende Forest Reserve, Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Philemon Ogbonna, expressed concern over rising cases of encroachment, deforestation, and illegal land transactions within the reserves.
He cited the illegal clearing of parts of the Nkalunta Forest Reserve in Iyalu/Iberenta, Ikwuano LGA, and unauthorized cocoa plantation activities within the Ubibia Forest Reserve in Bende LGA.
Mr. Ogbonna disclosed that government had received credible intelligence about plans by some individuals to illegally sell portions of the Ajata Ibeku Forest Reserve and the forest reserve in Arochukwu LGA.
He stressed that such activities pose serious environmental and economic threats to the state and will not be tolerated.
The Commissioner warned all persons engaged in illegal logging, encroachment, or land sales in forest reserves to desist immediately or face strict legal action.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to preserving forest reserves for environmental sustainability, biodiversity conservation, and the benefit of present and future generations.
Mr. Ogbonna urged traditional rulers, community leaders, youths, and other stakeholders to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities within forest reserves to the appropriate authorities.
