The Wife of the Imo State Governor, Her Excellency Chioma Uzodimma, has called for urgent action against human trafficking, saying victims are being lured with false job offers and forced into cyber fraud operations under coercion.
In a statement posted on Thursday, Mrs. Uzodimma said this year’s World Day Against Trafficking in Persons theme, “Trapped Behind the Scam,” highlights how hundreds of thousands worldwide are trafficked into online fraud rings and made to commit cyber-enabled crimes under surveillance and fear.
”It is happening to Nigerians, to people from our very communities who dared to dream of something more,” she said.
She linked the crisis to gender-based violence, noting that trafficking disproportionately affects women and girls.
Mrs. Uzodimma referenced the Sustainable Development Goals, stating that SDG Target 5.2 demands the elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls, including trafficking, while SDG Target 8.7 calls for immediate measures to eradicate forced labour and human trafficking.
Through her initiative, the GoodHope Women Flourish Initiative, she said the fight against trafficking remains a priority.
”The GoodHope Women Flourish Initiative stands firmly against human trafficking. Report suspicious recruitment, question offers that seem too good to be true, and protect the vulnerable,” she urged.
She added: “Behind every scam, there is a trapped human being desperately waiting to be seen.”
