Anambra State Police Command has rescued 60 children trafficked into the state in the last one month, and saved others subjected to inhuman treatment across the state.
Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of SCID, Wan Mantu Chongs, disclosed this when Beecharity Outlook Foundation, led by Sir Paul Nwosu, visited Commissioner of Police Dr. Ikioye Orutugu at the command headquarters, Amawbia, at the weekend.
The visit marked the 2026 International Day Against Child Labour themed: “Red Card to Child Labour: Fair Play for Children, Decent Work for Adults.”
Chongs expressed sadness over the dangers children face, but said the command under CP Orutugu was working hard to protect children and other vulnerable individuals.
“Just in the last one month, we’ve recovered about 60 children trafficked and sold into circumstances they know nothing about. They are minors, some between ages 1 and 10,” Chongs said.
He narrated a recent case of a woman who adopted two children after losing hers: “Strangely, I have never seen the kind of wickedness displayed on a child as she did. Their backs, every part of them, completely brutalised.”
CP Orutugu said the command is doing everything within its powers to protect children from harm, warning that anyone who violates the Child Rights Act will be prosecuted.
“Every child deserves medical care, welfare, good food and housing. But have we, as a people and government, deliberately provided for the Nigerian child?” he queried.
Foundation Chairman Sir Paul Nwosu appealed for collective action to protect children who lack a voice to defend themselves.
“The future of our society is sitting today in our homes, classrooms and communities. Let us join hands to ensure no child is robbed of childhood, denied education, or forced into labour. Every child deserves not a burden to carry, but a dream to pursue,” he said.
