The Deputy Inspector-General of Police, South East Zone, DIG Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, psc, fwc, MNIM, fdc, on Monday paid an operational visit to Abia State Police Command as part of strategic assessments across commands, in line with the directive of Inspector-General of Police IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+) NPM.
Addressing officers, DIG Onwuemelie said the visit was not ceremonial but aimed at strengthening operational efficiency, enhancing leadership accountability, and ensuring the policing vision of the current administration is effectively implemented.
He commended the Command for maintaining relative calm in the state in recent weeks, as reflected in situation reports, and acknowledged officers’ dedication in ensuring the safety of lives and property across Abia.
Onwuemelienoted that certain security concerns require strategic attention, citing violent attacks and armed robbery cases in Aba. He stressed that isolated incidents must be swiftly addressed to prevent escalation.
On security developments in Umuahia and other areas, the DIG clarified that activities often described as “cultism” are more accurately manifestations of organised youth gang violence.
He emphasised the need for intelligence-driven policing strategies to dismantle such networks and curb violence and intimidation.
Onwuemelielso highlighted the importance of stronger collaboration between the Police and key stakeholders, including academic institutions, noting emerging threats within university environments.
Reaffirming IGP Disu’s commitment to officers’ welfare, DIG Onwuemelie assured personnel of ongoing efforts in promotions, improved housing, and pension reforms. He addressed concerns on State Policing, assuring officers that their interests remain protected.
The DIG further announced that the Nigeria Police Force will embrace modern policing technologies, including the introduction of Artificial Intelligence into investigative processes, alongside specialised training for officers across State Police Commands.
