Governor Alex Otti on Thursday commissioned 20 new electric buses at the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal in Umuahia, bringing the total number of buses in the Abia Green Shuttle fleet to 40.
In a post via his official X handle, the Governor said the commissioning fulfills the promise made when the first set of 20 buses was launched on December 23, 2025.
According to him, transportation is a key driver of Abia’s economic growth, as it creates opportunities and improves the wellbeing of citizens.
Otti noted that the adoption of electric vehicles will reduce operational costs and emissions, while advancing the state’s vision of a modern, inclusive and greener Abia.
He added that the new buses have expanded cargo capacity and integrated accessibility features for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs), to promote inclusivity and universal access.
The Governor also announced stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, with zero tolerance for reckless driving, traffic light violations and vehicle overloading.
He said the Abia State Road Traffic and Safety Management Agency (ARTSMA) and the Harmonized Task Force will now extend operations till 10pm daily, including weekends, to safeguard lives and property.
Otti commended the Interagency Transport team led by Mr. Chinenye Mba Uzoukwu for their dedication, and stressed that proper management of transport assets and staff welfare remain top priorities.
He warned that acts of sabotage or vandalism against state assets will be investigated and culprits prosecuted.
The Governor further urged citizens to pay their taxes, saying it is critical to closing the gap between the present and the administration’s aspirations for a New Abia.
