The Abia State Police Command says it has arrested 13 male suspects aged between 20 and 27 years for armed robbery, unlawful possession of firearms, and vandalization of government property.
In a statement issued Wednesday morning, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said the arrests were made through actionable intelligence and the Command’s kinetic and non-kinetic strategies across the state.
She said operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit intercepted Uchenna Agbneiwu, 27, at Ubakala, Umuahia. He was found with a vandalized large galvanized pipeline concealed in sawdust inside a white Toyota Hiace bus. Efforts are ongoing to arrest other fleeing suspects.
On August 2, operatives at Aba North arrested Williams Ifeanyi, 27, of Market Road, Aba. He allegedly accosted a victim at gunpoint and dispossessed him of his bag and valuables. A pistol and live cartridges were recovered from him.
Also, on August 1, the Urratta Division arrested John Chigozie, 25, and David Anyaka, 26, in connection with an armed robbery at a hotel in Aba. A pistol and live ammunition were recovered. Investigation is ongoing.
On August 4, VCRU operatives at Bende Road raided a meeting of suspected cultists at Umuezeagwu, Umuahia North. The police recovered one pump-action gun, one Beretta pistol, live cartridges, one cutlass, one axe, substances suspected to be hard drugs, walkie-talkies, one face mask, two red berets and one black beret.
Other items recovered include one locally made pistol, one locally made single-barrel gun, and additional live cartridges.
The Abia Police spokesperson said the Command remains committed to protecting lives and property.
