As the dry season sets in, the Anambra Fire Service has issued a warning to residents to be more safety conscious during the harmattan period to prevent fire disasters that could result in loss of lives and property.

Mr Chukwudi Chiketa, Fire Chief of Anambra Fire Service, made the call in an interview with newsmen in Onitsha on Tuesday.

He stated that fire disasters were common in the state during the harmattan period.

Chiketa advised residents to switch off electrical appliances when not in use to prevent electrical fires as a way of mitigating the risk of fire outbreaks,

He pointed out that the state fire service was conducting a sensitisation campaign to educate the public on fire safety and prevention just as he explained that the campaign targeted churches, mosques, parks, marketplaces, and other establishments.

He revealed that in October, the state recorded three fire outbreaks, highlighting the importance of vigilance during the harmattan period just as he recommended taking general precautions during the harmattan season, such as, staying hydrated to avoid dehydration.

He further recommended the use of fog lights or low beams while driving to improve visibility, avoiding speeding and keeping a safe distance from other vehicles.
