Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has urged the Federal Government to create a natural disaster fund to help the state mitigate the impact of disasters on residents.
Nwifuru made the appeal on Monday during a meeting with officials of the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission, RMFAC, in Abakaliki.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Monday Uzor, the governor said the state had suffered repeated natural disasters that were draining resources.
“A lot of disasters have happened in this city. Wind and thunderstorms unroofed almost all the buildings inside this Government House. The natural disaster is costing us huge resources to rebuild,” he said.
Nwifuru also cited environmental hazards from mining pits, noting that the state bears the cost of remediation without benefiting from mining licences since they are issued by the Federal Government.
“And so this is why we are asking for the natural disaster fund,” he said.
