Gov Otti Approves Retrofitting of Amachara General Hospital, Umuahia

Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has approved the upgrade and retrofitting of the Amachara General Hospital Umuahia to offer highest quality of health services, as well as the Diagnostic Centre to offer all diagnostic services.

The State Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday while briefing newsmen on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council meeting chaired by the Governor.

The Commissioner who said the Council also approved the State Wash Integrated Program to include the upgrade of key water facilities with solar power and water treatment, would also tackle open defecation through the construction of ten ultra-modern facilities across the three zones of Abia,

Okey Kanu further disclosed that the Governor would on Wednesday this week flag-off the reconstruction of the 41.4 km stretch of Ohafia–Arochukwu Road, adding that the Governor is interested in opening up all roads across the State to aid farmers and ease of transportation.

On the celebration to mark Abia at 33 today Tuesday, Kanu said the event would be on a low key to reflect on the journey so far and chat a new course for the people of Abia

On his part, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Uche, explained that the Amachara General Hospital and Abia Diagnostic Centre would be upgraded to offer services such as internal medicine, nephrology, cardiology, surgical services and general surgery including, brain and spine surgery, obstetrics, gynecology, eye care among others .

He explained that the Government has given approval the hiring of “high calibre” specialists to offer the services and also mentor existing Staff at the facilities

Meanwhile responding to a question, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity Mr Ferdinand Ekeoma, said that health workers and some agencies and institutions, who were owed accumulated salary arrears would begin to receive payment very soon.

He added that a total of N19.2 billion was owed as salary arrears by the previous administrations but added that Governor Otti had directed that the arrears be done in instalments starting from August.
