The Anambra State Government has reopened the Nnewi New Motorcycle Spare Parts Market, which was shut a week ago for non-compliance with the government’s order to open every Monday for business.
Southeastposts reports that the Special Adviser to the Governor on Trade and Markets, Chief Evarist Uba, had shut the market during a visit, faulting traders for defying the order.
Uba had threatened to extend the ban if traders failed to comply with the directive to operate on Mondays, citing the need to boost economic activities in the state.
The ban was lifted on Monday after Nnewi North Local Government Chairman, Mr Echezona Anazodo, visited the market and found significant compliance.
Anazodo praised traders for complying, stating that shops of non-compliant traders would be sealed.
He emphasised that the entire market shouldn’t suffer due to a few traders, saying, “I am happy to see that traders complied with the order to resume for business. I want to believe that if there was even half of this turnout last week, the market would not have been shut down.”
Anazodo warned that the government would take a tough stance on traders who continued to flout the rules, adding, “We don’t want a situation where the entire market would be shutdown just because of a few traders, instead, those traders should bear their brunt themselves.”
