Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, has directed the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection to immediately engage with families and injured survivors of the road accident that occurred on Saturday, February 14, 2026, along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway near the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu.
In a statement made available to newsmen Monday evening, signed by the Commissioner Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection Abia State Government, Mrs. Ngozi Blessing Felix, Governor Otti also directed the aforementioned Ministry to assess the needs of those affected and co-ordinate appropriate support measures, including medical assistance and compassionate relief interventions.
According to the statement, Governor Otti promised the beareved families that the Abia state government stands in solidarity with all those affected by this painful loss just as he assured them of its continued support during this difficult period.
The Governor also reiterated his administration’s commitment to maintaining road safety awareness and collaborating with relevant authorities to reduce occurrence of such tragic incidents.
Abia State government equally conveyed its sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of the fourteen persons who lost their lives in the fatal road accident.
The statement noted that the tragic incident has brought immense grief to the affected families and the wider Abia State, praying that the souls of the departed rest in peace just as he asked God to grant the families strength and comfort in this time of mourning.
Southeastposts reports that fourteen traders doing business at Isi Gate Market, Umuahia lost their lives in the unfortunate accident while returning from Enugu State after attending a traditional marriage ceremony.
The accident occurred at about 6:45 PM along the busy Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway.
The victims, who conduct their businesses along Bonny Street by Owerri Road, Umuahia, had traveled to Enugu to attend the marriage of one of their fellow traders.
