In a bid to promote inclusivity, the Abia State Disability Commission on Friday donated wheelchairs and other assistive devices to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in the state.
During the presentation in Umuahia, Chairman David Anyaele stated that the initiative aims to promote inclusivity and improve the quality of life for PWDs.
Anyaele said provisions were made for 85 beneficiaries in the first phase of the distribution exercise.
He described the gesture as a testament to the government’s commitment to supporting the most vulnerable members of society.
“The assistive devices will help persons with physical disabilities live with dignity and respect,” he said.
He added that the devices would enhance mobility, empowerment and participation in the socio-economic development of their communities.
Anyaele lauded Gov. Alex Otti for consistently prioritising the needs and care of Persons with Disabilities.
He said the governor directed all ministries, departments and agencies to prioritise PWDs in policies, programmes and activities.
“In 2026, all ministries are expected to show how PwDs benefit from their work and sustain the Disability Law,” Anyaele said.
Responding, beneficiaries’ representative, David Onuoha, thanked the government, saying, “This has never happened before in Abia.”
He added, “We are very happy and pledge our unalloyed support to our able governor.”
