Mbah Upgrades ESUTH With N500m Equipment, Targets World-Class Status

‎The administration of Governor Peter Mbah has upgraded facilities at the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH), Parklane, with new surgical equipment and medical facilities valued at over N500m.

‎The Chief Medical Director, Prof. Bethrand Ngwu, disclosed this while conducting Government House Correspondents round the newly installed facilities at the weekend.

‎Prof. Ngwu said the intervention is part of efforts to transform ESUTH into a world-class tertiary healthcare and specialist training centre.
‎
‎He said the upgrades, including the main theatre, Accident and Emergency Department and specialised equipment for neurosurgery and other complex procedures, will strengthen emergency care and support postgraduate accreditation.

‎According to him, the Accident and Emergency Department, which was empty before the intervention, has now been equipped to function as an autonomous unit where patients can be investigated, treated and operated on without unnecessary movement.

‎He said the hospital has recorded major accreditation successes since 2023, including a five-year accreditation from the National Postgraduate Medical College and the West African College of Surgeons in Family Medicine, Anaesthesia, Physiotherapy and Radiography, and an increased MBBS quota of 350 students by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.

‎Prof. Ngwu disclosed that ESUTH currently has about 176 consultants, nearly 300 resident doctors, 540 nurses and 120 house officers, with approval for more recruitment.

‎He also said 266 resident doctors benefited from the Medical Residency Training Fund introduced by the Mbah administration this year at nearly N1m per doctor to support specialist training.
‎
‎He added that the hospital is training biomedical engineers and has service agreements with suppliers to ensure long-term maintenance of the equipment, and dismissed reports that the new A&E building is reserved for VIPs.
‎
‎”The upgrades we have witnessed in the last three years have been substantial. His Excellency prefers to let his work speak for itself,” Prof. Ngwu said.
