The Diocese of Enugu, Anglican Communion, has urged urgent government action over reports of terrorists allegedly operating from forests across the South East.
In a communiqué issued at the end of its 19th Synod held from June 24 to June 28, 2026, at St. Peter’s Church Ogbete, the church said the security threat “should not be ignored.”
“The Synod notes, with serious concern, reports of terrorists operating within forests in the South East and urges both the Federal Government and governments in the region to immediately take steps to flush them out,” it stated.
Signed by Bishop Samuel Obiajulu Ike and other principal officers, the communiqué faulted the Federal Government despite the N5.41 trillion budgeted for insecurity in 2026, noting that kidnappings, killings, and attacks persist.
The church condemned the abduction and killing of civilians, including children and teachers, and rejected the reintegration of “repentant terrorists.” It called on President Bola Tinubu to ensure terrorists and their sponsors face severe punishment.
The Synod also said Christians appear to be deliberately targeted in attacks across Northern Nigeria and criticised delays in completing the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri Eastern Rail Line.
It further urged INEC to ensure transparency ahead of the 2027 elections, commended Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu for progress in infrastructure, security, healthcare, and education, and declared zero tolerance for gender-based violence.
