The Imo State Government has mediated a peace agreement between youths of Ohi Autonomous Community, Owerri, and cattle rearers operating in the area following recent clashes over farmland encroachment.
The reconciliation meeting was held at the palace of the Sarikin Hausa in Owerri, with leaders of both Ohi and Hausa communities in attendance.
President General of Ohi Autonomous Community, Victor Azunnaya Ogbuehi, said the community prioritises peaceful coexistence and is willing to release portions of land to herders to prevent further encroachment on farms.
Special Adviser to Governor Hope Uzodimma on Northern and Islamic Affairs, Hon. Suleiman Ibrahim Suleiman, urged residents to report herders found on farmlands to his office instead of resorting to confrontation. He pledged government’s commitment to sustaining the peace.
Sarikin Fulani, Alhaji Abdulahi Umaru, also pledged to maintain a cordial relationship with Ohi residents.
Government officials said follow-up meetings will be held to implement the agreements and prevent a recurrence.
