The Nigerian Army has arrested a suspect, Staff Sergeant Amoke Simon, over alleged involvement in fraud amounting to N114 million and claims of misrepresenting his role in past military operations.
According to information shared on Monday by security analyst Zaragoza Makama via his X account, Simon, said to be attached to the Nigerian Army Engineers Corps in Lagos, was apprehended at Port Harcourt International Airport while reportedly attempting to travel to Abuja.
Preliminary findings indicate that the suspect allegedly claimed involvement in the 2010 operation that led to the death of a notorious kidnapping figure, widely known as Osisikankwu, a claim military sources have described as inaccurate. Officers associated with the operation have also raised concerns over what they termed a misrepresentation of events.
Further checks of military records suggest that the suspect was not deployed to the operation in question or to any theatre in the North East, despite claims to the contrary, including alleged participation in counter insurgency efforts in Borno State.
The Abia State Government had earlier received the suspect and indicated willingness to provide support, including medical assistance, based on the representations made at the time.
The Nigerian Army has since commenced an investigation into the matter and is expected to take appropriate disciplinary measures in line with its regulations.
The case has prompted renewed attention on the need for thorough verification of claims made in relation to security operations, particularly where such claims are linked to public recognition or assistance.
Sources familiar with the investigation allege that the suspect may have engaged in a pattern of deception, including soliciting financial assistance under false pretences and presenting unverifiable accounts of operational involvement.
