Imo State Police Command has arrested a kidnapping gang linked to various abductions across South-East Nigeria.
The suspects, accused of collecting ransoms and killing captives, were arrested in Rivers State after a co-ordinated operation.
The suspects were paraded in Owerri alongside recovered firearms, including AK-47 rifles, shotguns, and ammunition.
Authorities described the group as a “ruthless network” operating across multiple states.
In recent time, security agencies have intensified efforts to dismantle kidnapping syndicates in the region.
It has been reported that most kidnapping cases are carried out by bandits disguising as secessionist agitators, targeting individuals for ransom.
The region’s security challenges are complicated by poverty, unemployment, and moral decay.
Amnesty International reported that at least 1,844 people killed and hundreds disappeared in South-east Nigeria between January 2021 and June 2023, attributing unrest to Biafra agitation.
