Worried by the statistics in relation to road traffic crashes, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Abia State Sector Commander, C.C. Ngozi Ezeoma, has called on stakeholder to prioritize the safety of pedestrians and cyclists during the 8th United Nations Global Road Safety Week.
Statistics have shown that road traffic crashes claim over 1.3 million lives annually.
Records have also shown that in Nigeria, 10,617 road traffic crashes occurred in 2023, resulting in 5,081 deaths and 31,874 injuries. A significant number of victims were pedestrians and cyclists.
In the light of the above, C.C. Ezeoma has emphasized the need for inclusive, accessible, and safe streets, especially for those who walk and cycle.
She called on urban planners, policymakers, and local government leaders to prioritize low-speed, people-centered streets.
She stated that in a bid to play their own part, the FRSC will intensify public enlightenment campaigns and collaborate with stakeholders to implement the Second Decade of Action on Road Safety (2021-2030) and the National Non-Motorized Transportation Policy.
She lauded the World Health Organization and partners supporting road safety initiatives while appreciating the media for shaping public behaviour and influencing policy.
