The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Abia State Chapter, has expressed their displeasure over the State Government’s policy of compelling churches to be paying taxes on their signposts.
CAN noted that as a Christian and God’s Own State, it is regrettable that Abia is the only state in the whole federation that is taxing churches on their signposts.
A release jointly signed on Tuesday by the Abia State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Rev. Ojo Ojo Uduma and the Secretary, Rev. Dr. Francis Okere, CAN pleaded with Governor Alex Otti, to revisit the matter and possibly rescind the policy.
The statement reads in part, “We passionately plead with her Excellency as a matter of urgency, to carefully look into this matter and possibly rescind this policy to avoid compelling the Body of Christ in the State from seeing this regime as being anti-church.
Also, the CAN leadership also suggested a roundtable discussion involving the state’s Christian leaders to find an amicable solution to the issue.
The taxation so imposed on churches according to checks by Southeastposts.com, has generated reactions among the Christian faith with many religious leaders faulting the policy.
