The current Rector, Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, Engr. Christopher Kalu Okoro, has been accused of financial recklessness, high-handedness in running the citadel of learning situated in the commercial nerve centre of Abia State.
His accusers who spoke to southeastposts.com on condition of anonymity recently, alleged that under his watch as the Rector, serious corrupt activities have been going on in the institution, yet he has been unperturbed about cautioning those carrying out the act, an act they believe, he is enjoying and getting proceeds from.
Others who spoke to southeastposts.com, further said that his corrupt practices and tendencies, are in conflict with the ideals of Governor Alex Otti of Abia State who they said has always warned members of his cabinet among others against sharp corrupt practices.
Another source who spoke to southeastposts.com on condition of anonymity, narrated how the Rector, Engr Christopher Kalu Okoro, employed more than 150 staff on adjunct/part-time basis in Abia Polytechnic, stating that this runs contrary to the policies of the institution and that of the Governor of the State Governor Alex Otti who understands that the institution is over staffed.
The source recalled how the institution dismissed some staff years ago on the grounds that the institution was over populated, stressing that the Rector did this without taking advice on best practices.
He said the Rector has been arrogating jobs and contracts to his friends and cronies and further revealed how the Rector ordered that the Staff of Abia Polytechnic in Umuahia Study Centre be brought back to Aba, adding that after it was returned, he contracted the Centre to his close friend.
The source also revealed that students of the Institution apply for NYSC manual registration through his Adviser whom they called Dan.
It was also gathered that Dan created a WhatsApp group and added 2023 graduates of the citadel of learning, whom he intimidates and woos to come to his office for NYSC mobilization, according to Sources, this was done at a certain amount.
Southeastpoats.com, also learnt that under the watch of the Rector, Engr Christopher Kalu Okoro, Director of Centre for Consultancy Services, Mr Otagburuagu R.O sold Abia Polytechnic property for more than Twenty Million Naira, frowning that the Rector did not query the young man, who is his close ally, not to talk of setting a panel to investigate the financial recklessness.
The sources said his financial recklessness has been further buttressed by the level of work going on at the Rector’s lodge in Aba, where he is renovating, stressing that a visit to the place, will show at a glance that he is a politician, not a public servant as he has pumped in millions in the room yet not completed.
Other sources who spoke, said the Rector has also appointed non-Academic Directors as members of Academic Board, informing that the name of the Board itself suggests that it is meant for Academic Staff.
The sources informed that when he was confronted on such decision, The Rector, cited the Edict that armed him to do so, saying that members of Academic Board comprised all Directors whereas he truly knows that the Edict refers to Academic Directors as it is what obtains in the Polytechnic system.
Meanwhile, a further inquiry into the accusations of financial recklessness and high-handedness levelled against the Rector, Engr Christopher Kalu Okoro, a Lecturer in Abia Polytechnic, said these allegations might be true or not stressing that the Rector since assuming Office, has reshaped the face of the citadel of learning.
He stated that the Rector has ensured that there is seamless procedure in the process of accessing semester results by students of the Institution which was different under various Rectors of the Institution just as he revealed that the Rector has been working tirelessly in ensuring that the institution shores up her Internally Generated Revenue IGR, to pay salaries.
