\n\u200eThe Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, announced this in a statement on Monday, June 23, 2026.

\n\u200eKanu said the restriction of Okada operations in designated areas is a public safety and security measure to protect lives and property.
\n\u200e
\n\u200eHe noted that while thousands depend on motorcycle transport for livelihood, the safety of citizens remains paramount and no economic consideration can outweigh the value of human life.
\n\u200e
\n\u200eThe government stated that the policy is not targeted at any ethnic group or community, but applies uniformly to all operators to enhance orderliness and support efforts to safeguard lives across the state.

\n\u200eAccording to the statement, the \u20a620,000 penalty will only be enforced from Monday, June 29, 2026. Any penalty amount already collected before the effective commencement date will be refunded accordingly.
\n\u200e
\n\u200eThe government also said all motorcycles previously impounded may be reclaimed free of charge after 48 hours, subject to verification and documentation requirements.
\n\u200e
\n\u200eHowever, all motorcycles already impounded must first be duly registered and documented before release.
\n\u200e
\n\u200ePrivate motorcycles will continue to enjoy free passage, but must be duly registered and documented in the state and are not permitted to carry any passengers. All motorcycles, tricycles, Keke, and commercial vehicles operating within Abia State must henceforth be duly registered and documented in accordance with government regulations.
\n\u200e
\n\u200eIn addition, all commercial motorcycle operators must wear the officially approved Abia State-issued Identification Vest while operating within their approved jurisdictions.
\n\u200e
\n\u200eTo address complaints of extortion and misconduct by enforcement officers, the government said a toll-free public complaints system has been established.
\n\u200e
\n\u200eThe government urged members of the public to report infractions by Task Force personnel through the Citizens Toll-Free Numbers: 0800000232, 08001235555, 08002225242. The ASHTF can also be reached on 08067955559, 08050725566, 09122223825.

\n\u200eThe government appealed to residents, transport operators, community leaders and members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with authorities.
