agriculture and improve the economy of the state, the Commissioner Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Cliff Agbaeze and other stakeholders on Tuesday visited three local government chairmen, appealing to them to enroll in the farmers database program.
‎
‎Southeastposts reports that the program is aimed at capturing cum documenting the information of farmers in the State, and empowering them where necessary to ensure sustainable greener agriculture in the State.
‎
‎While he stated that the first phase of the program has been successfully executed, he further revealed that 50,000 farmers were captured just as more than 80,000 hectares of farmland and 3000 crops have also been documented.
‎
‎He expressed willingness to capture all farmers in the state in the second phase as the total number of farmers did not reflect the number of all farmers in Abia State.
‎
‎While commending Governor Alex Otti for showing determination in bolstering the sector, Dr. Agbaeze said the scheme also seeks to know the location of the farmers.
‎
‎The Commissioner noted that with recent “remote sensing technology”, one could easily identify the size of land of a farmer, the texture and composition of the soil, and ascertain if fertilizers given to empower farmers was put to work or was diverted.
‎
‎Agbaeze who emphasised that different lands and communities have signature crops, called on Council Chairmen to assist them by serving as number one farmers and encouraged traditional rulers, community heads, councillors, residents, especially youths to embrace the program which has the potentials of lifting a community from poverty.
‎
‎He re-emphasised that the program will include all farmers in the state, pointing out that despite the 2,000 input distribution formerly achieved, the state government is looking forward to another 15,000 input distribution.
‎
‎Agbaeze while expressing optimism that the program will achieve the desired result, added that all farmers must have a farm and must have a tag proving beyond doubt that the land is theirs.
‎
‎In his speech, the Chief Executive Officer of Kitovu Technological Company and a Consultant, Nwachinemere Emeka said the data drives decision in agriculture, describing it as pathway to agriculture.
‎
‎He called on stakeholders at ward level, councillors, and the communities in each ward to assist in making the program a success, stressing that no farmer would be left out.
‎
‎Reacting to the requirements for the scheme, Emeka reeled out that such person should be a youth to ensure physical strength to execute the task effectively.
‎
‎He revealed that a National ID card is imperative to secure a data, and that individual should own and sufficiently should be able to operate a smart phone.
‎
‎He equally flagged off the enumerator form which shall be given to Local Government Mayors and Councillors, to ensure easy report, adding that it is pertinent to fill details of farms and farmers in the locality.
‎
‎In their separate responses, Local Government Mayors of Bende Deacon Bassey Ụwawụnkonye, Ọhafia Chief Ujuu Kalụ and Arọchukwu LGA, Engr Okereke Eze Arọ, lauded the present administration for the milestone
