The Police Command in Anambra on Tuesday raided some black spots in the state as part of its operations to rid the state of criminals ahead of the Imo-Awka masquerade festival.<\/p>\n
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement in Awka.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Ikenga said the operations in Awka and environs led to the arrest of one suspect, Nasiru Samaila, male, 25, adding that the operation was carried out by the police operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Awka Sector, late in the evening of May 19.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
He said, \u201cThe suspect in a bid to escape started shooting indiscriminately, but was subdued by the police team which fired him on his right leg.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
\u201cUnfortunately, one of the police operatives sustained a gunshot injury and has been taken to the hospital where he is currently responding to treatment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Ikenga said that items recovered from the suspect included one locally made Berretta pistol, live ammunition, one knife and a large quantity of substances suspected to be hard drugs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
The police spokesman explained that the exercise was to ensure a crime-free festival.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
Continuing, \u201cThe Police Command in Anambra State, was acting on information received overtime on how miscreants, under the guise of celebrating the Imo-Awka masquerade festival, engaged in criminal activities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
According to Ikenga, the police has intensified raid and discreet operations on some identified black spots in Awka and environs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
The police spokesman said the command remained committed to enforcing the law and ensuring public safety.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
