A man was electrocuted on Tuesday while vandalizing an electricity facility belonging to MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) in Enugu.
The incident occurred at the Akonobi 500KVA Distribution Substation along Independence Avenue, Independence Layout, Enugu.
MEDL’s Head of Communications, Emeka Ezeh, described the incident as “unfortunate”, stating the deceased and his accomplices had loosened two intermediate cables and were removing a third when electricity supply was restored, leading to the electrocution. Two cables were missing, indicating accomplices fled with them.
Ezeh expressed concern over increasing vandalism targeting electricity infrastructure, impacting the company’s revenue and service quality.
He called for customer vigilance and collaboration to prevent such acts.
According to him, the police evacuated the body, depositing it at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) morgue.
