A federal lawmaker, Chief Amobi Ogah, has charged Nigerians to re-define the essence of governance by demanding accountability and transparency from those they elected into office.
Ogah, who is representing Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency of Abia, said that the essence was to ensure that public trust was not abused.
He said this on Saturday at the second edition of his impactful representation empowerment held at Onuaku Primary School Field, Uturu, in Isuikwuato Local Government Area.
Ogah called for fundamental shift in the perception of public office among Nigerians so that leadership positions could be seen as a sacred trust and not a platform for personal gain.
He said : “I am convinced that holding public office is a real privilege bestowed by the people and must be approached with a deep sense of responsibility and service.
“Since holding public office is a privilege and not a business venture we must therefore change our mindset accordingly.
“The prevailing attitude of viewing political positions as avenues for wealth accumulation has greatly hindered national development.
“And genuine leadership must be anchored on selfless transparency and unwavering commitment to the welfare of the people.”
Ogah extolled Gov. Alex Otti for his dynamic and transformative leadership in the state, describing him as ” a governor that listens to his people.”
He charged both the elected officers and the electorate to continue to support Otti’s administration in order to sustain the dividends of democracy they were enjoying.
Ogah, a chieftain of the ruling Labour Party in Abia, warned them to be cautious of the unscrupulous politicians who would want to buy their votes, stressing that those people had nothing to offer.
He told his constituents that he remained undoubtedly committed to policies and initiatives that would enhance their socio-economic well-being.
“I am very passionate about making a difference and impact in the lives of my people,” he insisted.
Ogah, who highlighted some of his tremendous achievements in his two years in office, including the massive infrastructural development, promised to do more for his people.
Meanwhile, Ogah distributed different items worth a billion naira, including mini-buses, cars, tractors, tricycles, grinding machines, sewing machines and others to his constituents for their socio-economic emancipation.
In his remarks, Gov. Otti, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Kenneth Kalu, lauded Ogah for his impactful representation.
“What is happening today is what leadership and representation should be all about.
“It is not not speaking all the grammar and all the noise-making in the social media without impacting on the constituents,” Otti said.
Also, Chairman, House Committee on Appropriation, Mr Abubakar Kabir, said that Ogah is one of the strong voice who had been part and parcel of activities in the 10th National Assembly.
Kabir, represented by a fellow lawmaker, Mr Mark Essien, urged members of Ogah’s constituency to vote for him for a second term in 2027.
In a goodwill message, Chairman, House Committee of Financial Crimes, Mr Ginger Onwusibe, described the programme as a powerful demonstration of true and responsive representation.
