A group known as The Rising Sun, has condemned Senator Orji Uzor Kalu’s recent appearance on Channels Television, describing the interview as “disgraceful” and “reckless.”
In strongly worded statement jointly signed by Chairman Maxwell Dede and Coordinator Father Augustine Odinmegwa, the group accused the Senator representing Abia North of making “wild and unfounded claims,” particularly his assertion that over 30,000 people had been killed due to agitations led by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
The Rising Sun said Sen. Kalu’s remarks amounted to defending the “infamous verdict” delivered by Justice James Omotosho and faulted him for what they called a “shameless attempt” to ridicule Kanu’s reaction to the judgment.
According to the statement, Kalu’s comments also disparaged the Igbo community and those who expressed disappointment over the ruling.
The group accused the former Abia governor of pursuing political interests at the expense of his people, alleging that Kalu’s recent public posture confirms long-held suspicions that he is among “Igbo elites prepared to play any role for political gain.”
Rising Sun rejected Senator Kalu’s comparison between his own past legal troubles and Kanu’s situation, maintaining that the circumstances surrounding both cases are entirely different.
The group further argued that without what it described as Nigeria’s “flawed electoral system,” Kalu would not have remained relevant in governance.
It also challenged Senator Kalu’s claims about casualties in the South East, asking him to clarify who authorised the alleged killings just as they accused security agencies of past violence against IPOB members and questioned why the victims should be blamed for events they described as unprovoked.
While referring to Kalu’s recent comments an attempt to curry favour with the Presidency, the Rising Sun Group alleged that the Senator now seeks political relevance ahead of the 2027 elections, despite previously opposing President Bola Tinubu’s 2023 presidential bid.
They, however, concluded with a warning to Senator Kalu and other political actors to desist from making unguarded and treacherous remarks about Kanu’s ordeal, saying that history will remember those who “betray their people for selfish gains.”
