Abia State Government has once again frowned at the attitude of Security Agents, especially the Police, whom they accused of arresting defaulters and taking them to their station instead of handing them to the appropriate authority.
The State Government, said such attitude violates the Abia State Basic Environmental Sanitation Laws as well as can be viewed as sobatage to the efforts of the State government in maintaining a healthy environment.
It reminded the security agents that their duty included to complement the efforts of the state government and ensure that there is compliance during the exercise, urging them to hand over defaulters arrested to the appropriate authority.
The State Government also came hard on those who issue stamped paper to defaulters from Ikwuano axis as cover paper, promising that the State Government will engage with the Mayor of Ikwuano LGA to fish out those responsible for such an aberration, emphasizing that these behaviours run contrary to the Abia Basic Environmental Sanitation Laws.
Addressing newsmen on Saturday after the Monthly Sanitation Exercise for the month of September, the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Philemon Ogbonna, represented by the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Environment, Mr. Ikechukwu Oriuwa, lauded men of the 145 Battalion of the Nigerian Army stationed around Umuoriehe, Umuahia South LGA.
According to him, their participation in the exercise is an indication that all sectors of the State is already keying into the state government’s efforts at ensuring the state continues to maintain good aesthetics and clean environment

He lauded workers at Abia Line Umuahia, for coming out en masse to participate in the exercise despite cleaning up their business environment on Friday, stressing that the consciousness among the people regarding keeping their environment clean is increasing.
Also speaking, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Alex Otti on Environment, Prof. Ijeoma Iheukwumere, also frowned at the attitude of security agents, especially the Police, who arrest defaulters and fail to hand them over to the appropriate authority, describing their attitude as “sabotage”.
She also cautioned parents over what she described as “their failure to control their ward”, warning that the Abia State Government would no longer overlook these actions as they frustrate the state government’s effort at improving the environmental cleanliness of Abia State.
Southeastposts reports that out of the 108 defaulters, 13 were discharged including minors, health conditions and nature of work.
