Dr. Ikoro Onyinyechi Stella, has emerged the new Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba chapter, with a pledge to uphold the constitution of the union and pursue policies that promote transparent leadership and inclusive decision-making.
In the union’s election conducted on Thursday, September 25th, 2025 at the Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Dr. Mrs Ikoro, pulled a total of 76 votes to defeat 4 other contestants.
Speaking shortly after her emergence, Dr. Ikoro assured that she will discharge her duties with a deep sense of responsibility, stressing that she is not going to rule but serve with the fear of God.
She pledged to ensure improved welfare, working conditions and career advancement for all academic staff, adding that she will make effective dialogue and constructive engagement with management and external stakeholders a key component of his administration.
Dr. Mrs. Ikoro also promised that she will work assiduously to ensure there is timely payment of entitlements, proper remittance of deductions, regular consultations and feedback from members, admitting that their voices will be key.
While expressing hope of a more dynamic ASUP, Dr. Ikoro, said she dreams of an ASUP where every member will feel heard, valued, and empowered, emphasizing the need for members to build bridges across divides, restore dignity in service, and reposition the union to reclaim its rightful place in national discourse and labour.
She reminded members that to achieve the set goals, they must rally round to support her, calling on all to jettison politics of division and embrace the purpose of unity, saying if they commit to this course , together they will rewrite the narrative of the union and set a new standard for leadership in the citadel of learning,
She further described her emergence as victory for integrity, accountability, transparency and the collective voice of every member of the union.
She expressed her appreciation to the Rector and his Management team for giving the union a conducive hall for the election while saluting fellow contestants, insisting that their participation enriched the process while their courage to serve is a testament to their commitment to the growth of the union.
The new Chairman commended the electoral committee for conducting a free, fair and credible election, stressing that they have upheld the values needed to protect and advance the union.
She, on behalf of the newly elected executives, pledged to serve with unity, attract the progresses the union desire, reiterating that the collective welfare of all will be their priority, adding that God helping them, none will regret the choices they made by electing them.
Other elected members include: Clinton Chikezie Ugorji Ph.D- Vice Chairman. Mr Ifeanyi Abazie- Financial Secretary. Mrs Favour Adiele- Welfare Director. Dr. (Mrs.) Lovina Nnebuife Osobase- Treasurer. and TPL DR. Stephen Chukwudi Nwazue – Publicity Secretary.
