The Commissioner of Police Abia State, CP Danladi Isa, has tasked officers of the Juvenile and Women Centres (JWC) and gender sections of the Command to uphold the highest standards of professionalism during investigations.
CP Isa also cautioned them against unprofessional conducts such as requesting funds from complainants or survivors, making careless remarks, or attempting to resolve cases through Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).
A statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said the CP gave the charge during a conference held on Thursday with Gender Officers of the Command at the State Headquarters, Umuahia.
According to the statement, the conference, is in line with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to build a professionally competent, service-driven, rule-of-law-compliant, and people friendly Police Force.
During the event, CP Isa maintained that all cases must be thoroughly investigated, including conducting medical examinations to obtain expert opinions in order to ensure diligent prosecution of such cases in court.
The CP, also directed that in cases that requires statutory transfer, preliminary investigations must be diligently concluded before such cases are transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and prosecution.
DSP Maureen further revealed that CP Isa also warned officers to avoid any misconduct that would tarnish the image of the Force, adding that appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against erring officers.
The Abia Police boss, however, encouraged officers to remain law-abiding, professional and diligent in carrying out their duties, assuring them of his support.
He also urged them to reach out to him directly whenever challenges arise, noting that cases of gender-based violence are also of international interest just as he warned officers to show empathy while dealing with survivors.
