Contrary to reports in some media outlets that many people died during the fracas at Onitsha Main Market, the Anambra State Government has dismissed the report, stating that only one person died in the disturbance that occurred on Tuesday.

The state Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, disclosed this in a statement, revealing that the police also arrested erring officials.

Mefor said, “The Anambra State Government is aware of the disturbance that occurred in Onitsha Main Market. We appreciate the swift intervention of the Police, who have restored calm and order to the area,”

He revealed that an investigation into the incident has begun, pledging that the government will ensure that all necessary measures are taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

“Regrettably, one of the victims, Miss Chinwe Igwe, was confirmed dead on arrival. Her body has been deposited at the hospital morgue for autopsy and preservation,” the commissioner said.

Mefor added that the other victims are currently receiving treatment and are responding positively.

He said that Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has directed that the suspects be arrested and handed over to the police for prosecution and for the medical needs of those who sustained injuries be taken care of.

Southeastposts reports that normalcy has since been restored in the area by the Police, while patrols and monitoring continue by law enforcement agents to ensure sustained peace.

Recall that operatives of the Ocha Brigade, an environmental law enforcement unit established by Gov. Chukwuma Soludo’s administration, reportedly shot and killed a woman and injured several others on Tuesday at the Emeka Offor Plaza area of Onitsha Main Market.

It was gathered that the security operatives suddenly opened fire on the traders during a verbal disagreement, leading to chaos and the death of the victims.

According to a video circulating online , the outraged traders in retaliation set a car said to belong to the Ocha Brigade’s Commander in Onitsha ablaze, vowing that the security outfit will never have peace until justice is done.
