Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Danladi, has expressed concern over violent crimes and jurisdictional matters, delay in apportioning overnight cases which often leads to over-detention of suspects.
The CP has also expressed worry over issues concerning juvenile offenders and the need for Borstal homes in the state as well as need for frequently scheduling of juvenile court sittings to promptly attend to cases of defilement and other sexual offenses involving minors.
He opined that these measures would ensure quick access to justice, prevent over-detention, protect suspects’ rights and diligent prosecution of cases among other benefits.
In a statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday by the Public Relations Officer PPRO, Abia State Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, the CP stated these during a courtesy visit to the Chief Judge of Abia State, Hon. Justice Lilian Abai where he also acknowledged the judiciary as one of the principal partners of the Police in fighting crime and criminality, hence the need to strengthen the collaboration between the Police and the Judiciary.
CP Isa also stressed the importance of forming collaboration in fight against crime, assuring that the Abia Police Command under his watch will continue to synergize with relevant institutions in a bid to defeat crime in Abia State.
Responding, the Chief Judge of the State, Hon. Justice Lilian Abai, assured the police of her partnership and support.
She pledged her commitment to the concerns raised and further solicited the co-operation of Area Commanders and DPOs to allow Magistrates access to police cells within their jurisdictions in line with the new criminal justice requirements.
The Abia Chief Judge also requested the provision of court duty policemen at the High Court while also reaffirming the commitment of the Judiciary in fostering synergy and strengthening collaboration in the fight against crime in the state.
