Anambra State Police Command says it has arrested a suspect in connection with the murder and mutilation of a pregnant nurse’s body in Anambra State.
The Command also said items suspected to be human body parts were recovered at a native doctor’s shrine.
The suspect, identified as Somtochukwu Nwafor, 24, was taken into custody for the crime in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Council of the state. The police are searching for the prime suspect and other accomplices.
Spokesperson for the police command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement, confirmed the arrest and recovery of human parts at the shrine.
According to him, the lifeless body of the nurse was discovered in a soakaway in Ogbunike, adding that during interrogation, Nwafor confessed to being the girlfriend of the prime suspect, Chiemerie Obika Elobisi, now at large. She revealed details of how they sold body parts to various native doctors in the area.
Further investigation revealed that the victim, a trained nurse, was lured to the suspect’s house under the pretext of seeking medical treatment.
“Given the information from the suspect, operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), in the early hours of July 29, 2025, burst a shrine of an identified native doctor, Nwafor Ofornwatadile from Itima Amawa Village, Ogbunike, and recovered suspected human body parts, concealed in cellophane bags.
“The command is on a manhunt for the prime suspect, and other collaborators,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police (CP), Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the heinous act, describing it as inhumane, criminal and an affront to public morality and the sanctity of life.
As investigation intensifies, the CP urged anyone with useful information to come forward, assuring that informants would be protected.
