A family of seven escaped death in the early hours of Saturday, when a three-storey building located around Olokoro Road, Federal Low Cost Housing Estate, Ohobo Afara Umuahia, Abia State collapsed.
According to residents in the area who spoke to newsmen on Saturday, the building which is yet to be completed, collapsed in the early hours of Saturday at about 3 am while destroying a Bungalow close to it housing a family of seven.
Eyewitnesses told Southeastposts that no life was lost, adding that those affected including a nursing mother, her five months old baby, and another who sustained varying degrees of injuries were quickly rushed to hospital.
Those who spoke to newsmen, said the building which belonged to a popular All Progressives Congress (APC) Chieftain in the State, had caved in before it finally collapsed on Saturday.
When Southeastposts visited the scene, it was observed that the compound houses two other three storey buildings which has also caved in.
Others who also spoke to Southeastposts, accused the APC chieftain of always abandoning his property, informing that this is not the first time his property has wreaked havoc. They also accused him of using substandard materials in executing building projects.
Reacting to the unfortunate incident while inspecting the level of damage, the General Manager of Umuahia Capital Development Authority, Mr Kingsley Agomoh, thanked God that no life was lost in the unfortunate incident.
He announced the sealing up of the premises of the three-storey building, adding that the Agency has commenced an investigation to ascertain the cause of the collapse, pointing out that appropriate punishment will be meted out to the owner in line with the law.
Speaking to newsmen, the occupants of the bungalow which was affected by the collapse, Mr Ugwumba Shedrack and Nkechi Uzochi said that the incident happened at about three o’clock in the morning, explaining that the collapsed building belongs to an APC chieftain.
