Following issues encountered during land administration, the Imo State House of Assembly has enacted new law to regulate such encumbrance.
Southeastposts reports that the new law which now awaits the Governor’s assent will replace the State Lands Administration and Geographical Information Service Law No.3 of 2021, and will also enhance efficiency and accessibility of Land records.
According to the Deputy Speaker of the House, Amara Chyna Iwuanyanwu who is also the chief sponsor of the new law, said that it will make Land administrative processes easier, faster and indeed, more effective, while at the same time promote transparency in all Land transactions in the State.
He maintained that with the availability of modern technology which he said has improved governance will enable the State to provide reliable automation and digitalization of the State Lands Registry.
The Deputy Speaker explained that the new law also aims at strengthening Lands administration system to ensure greater transparency and efficiency, vis-a-vis title issuance and dispute resolution.
He further explained that it would mandate a comprehensive digital transformation of Land documentations, so as to enable traceability, accessibility and a centralized monitoring across the State, thereby making the administrative processes easier, faster and more effective.
Iwuanyanwu added that, through the deployment of Geographic Information Service system, the law would enhance urban and rural planning by supporting Data-driven decision making.
The Deputy Speaker, while further expatiating on the benefits of the new law said it would also curb issues of land grabbing, racketeering and associated fraud.
He maintained that the new law will give room for an independent agency that will be empowered to checkmate illegal land activities, such as title forgeries, multiple allocations and encroachments.
Southeastposts report that after the passage of the new law, the Clerk of the House, Chinelo Emeghara was directed to make a clean copy of the law for the Governor’s assent.
