The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has stressed the need for community collaboration in improving safety and addressing the escalating insecurity in the South-East region.

Orutugu made this call during a security meeting at News Central’s town hall in Awka on Thursday.

The meeting also mirrowed the state’s security stability and offered suggestions to improve safety and security.

During the engagement, stakeholders, security operatives, traditional rulers, and community leaders the CP advised to focus on collaborative solutions to the challenges of kidnapping, violent crime, and law enforcement accountability that have plagued the region in recent years.

He emphasised that the meeting was aimed at interacting with the citizens, especially Ndi Anambra, where thoughts on security concerns would be provoked.

Responding to complaints by members of the public, he underscored the importance of community partnership in restoring peace while expressing displeasure with the actions of IPOB and other groups and promising to nip insecurity in the bud.

The CP reiterated the need for an alternative dispute resolution to resolve issues bordering on disputes over land, such as kingship tussles, boundary issues, farmers/herders clashes and/or any other related issues.

He said, “There is a need for community collaboration between residents and critical agencies to improve safety and security across the state. Collaboration and alternative dispute resolution will resolve issues bordering on disputes over land, such as kingship tussles, boundary issues, farmers/herders clashes, and/or any other related issues.

“Some of these issues, if not properly addressed, degenerate into serious crimes and crises.

“Therefore, we seek greater community engagement, resources, and intelligence to improve the security operations that can help the Police Command to better understand the community needs and concerns, as well as improve security in every area of the state.

“This approach recognises that security is a collective responsibility and that community involvement is essential to achieving lasting peace and stability.”

He also decries the level of moral decay and calls on parents/guardians to be better role models to their children/wards, by creating a deliberate relationship with them, as it will help to assess and direct them properly.

The police command cited the success of recent collaborations with local industrialists and traditional rulers, which have provided critical resources and intelligence for ongoing security operations.
