The paramount traditional ruler of Amaba Autonomous Community, HRM King O’tuwa 1st, has lauded the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, and Hon. Obi Aguocha (Ikwuano, Umuahia North, and Umuahia South Federal Constituency), alongside five lawmakers for sponsoring the Bill for an Act to Establish the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture (MOUAU) as a Conventional University.

Recall that the bill passed its second reading on January 6, 2025, and marks a significant step toward expanding the University’s academic and research scope.

Reacting to the bill, HRM King O’tuwa 1st, a long-time advocate of transformation of MOUAU, expressed his profound appreciation for this milestone, noting that he has consistently championed the university’s transition into a conventional institution.

Speaking with newsmen, HRM King O’tuwa 1st stressed the importance of broadening the university’s academic mandate to include disciplines beyond agriculture.

He highlighted that incorporating programs in Arts, Medicine, Law, Social Sciences, and Humanities would make MOUAU more competitive, and attract a diverse student body, and enhance interdisciplinary research.

He also emphasized that interdisciplinary research—such as the integration of agriculture with engineering, biotechnology, and health sciences—would spur innovation in mechanized farming, food security, and sustainable development.
