The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Chief Festus Keyamo has flagged off the construction of Abia Airport at Nsulu, Isialangwa North LGA of Abia State.
Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Alex Otti promised to pay all necessary compensations to the land donors just as he thanked stakeholders of the host community and National assembly members from Abia for their support and President Bola Tinubu for approving an airstrip for Abia and the partnership to upgrade the airstrip to an international cargo airport.
Governor Otti expressed his gratitude to the federal government for the project, stating that the airport will be a game-changer for the state’s economy.
He said that the project is a dream come true for Abians and it will not only boost the economy but also create jobs and stimulate growth in the aviation sector.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Chief Festus Keyamo during the ground breaking ceremony, promised that the people of Nsulu would be considered first during employment.
He described Airport project as a social infrastructure where people can access any part of the country. He also noted that Abia is the heart of industralization in the South-East.
Keyamo praised Governor Alex Otti for his vision in converting the initial federal government project from an airstrip to an international airport, as well as his commitment to providing the needed counterpart funds.
On his part, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu said the process of attracting federal projects need legislation which he and other colleagues contributed.
He lauded President Tinubu whom he said recognised his position as deputy speaker to approve an airstrip for Abia and promised that they would continue to partner Governor Alex Otti to attract development to Abia State.
Also speaking, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Barrister Nkiru Onyejeocha observed that the airport project will create jobs adding that Abians will soon feel the impact of the project.
