Abia Assembly Pass into Law Bill to Establish State Ministry of Finance

H.A.B 27, The Abia State Ministry of Finance (Incorporated) Bill 2024, a Bill seeking to establish the Abia State Ministry of Finance (Incorporated) and for other matters related thereto has been passed into Law.

During Plenary on Tuesday, the Bill, now Law, sponsored by the Majority Leader, Okoro Uchenna Kalu of Arochukwu State Constituency received accelerated consideration after several debates.

Among the merits of the Law include conducive partnership for investments by the private sector, wealth generation, minimized reliance on Federal allocation and shall be deemed to come into effect from the 26th of November, 2024.

Also during Plenary, the member for Ohafia North State Constituency, Hon Egwuronu Ochuru Obasi, in a Matter of Urgent Public Importance called on Abia State Government, through the Ministry of Health to investigate the immediate and remote causes of adverse drug reaction suffered by his constituents in Abiriba after consuming drugs distributed by donor agency, Imo-Hope for the Hopeless, attracted by the Presbyterian Church in Abiriba.

The Assembly considered the incident a huge embarrassment as the said Agency did not get the approval of relevant bodies, resolving that the Ministry of Health should investigate the incident to ascertain who the donor agency is, source of the drugs, querying if qualified health practitioners were involved in the exercise.

Recall that the Abia State Ministry of Health had frowned at the practice of holding outreaches in the State without authorization.

The State government also decried the hospitalisation of some persons who attended a free medical outreach in Abiriba, Ohafia LGA, on Saturday, maintaining that the distribution of drugs to the public by uncertified persons was without the authorisation of the state government.

Correspondent reports that members of the Aba South Legislative Council led by Prince Paul Nwandu were in the Assembly’ to observe plenary.
