Nibo Killings: Anambra Govt Pledges to Apprehend Assailants

The Anambra State Government on Monday pledged to go after those responsible for the brutal cult-related killings that took place in the Nibo community of Awka South Local Government Area on Sunday.

Southeastposts.com, reported that the violent incident, linked to hoodlums believed to be cult members, left at least 13 people dead during the community’s New Yam festival, known locally as the ‘Nibo Onwa Asaa’ festival.

The sordid event erupted when assailants, arriving in a Lexus 300 jeep, opened fire on festival-goers near the Oye Nwochichi Market and Nibo Old Maternity, killing eight individuals instantly.

In a press statement issued on Monday, Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, confirmed that the state government is aware of the tragic incident, stating that measures are already in motion to locate and apprehend those involved in the killings.

He said, “The Anambra State Government is aware of the deaths that resulted from alleged cult-related actions in Nibo, Awka South LG, on Sunday, October 20, 2024.”

Mefor described the killings as part of a troubling trend of violent crimes associated with cult groups, reiterating the state government’s commitment to eradicating such violence.

He extended condolences to the families of the victims and assured that the administration would thoroughly investigate the incident to bring the culprits to book.

Mefor called on members of the public to provide any relevant information that could facilitate arrests, guaranteeing confidentiality and a reward for useful tips just as he encouraged law-abiding citizens to continue their daily activities without fear while the state collaborates with security agencies to manage the situation.
