Aba Residents in Awe as Assailants Shoot Heavily around, Umuojima, Osisioma Junction, others

Residents of Aba on Monday Morning scampered for safety over heavy gunshots in some parts of the commercial nerve centre of Abia State.

Southeastposts.com, gathered that the heavy gunshots were heard Monday morning between 7am to 11am around fly over axis extending to Umuojima to Osisioma junction, Bata, Power line among others.

Though it was not clear those behind the heavy gunshots which caused heavy tension among Aba residents, a source who pleaded anonymity, said it was alleged that men in two Sienna vehicles were behind the shooting.

He told Southeastposts. com that credible information revealed that the assailants who were heavily armed, dressed in black uniform, raked areas like Umugo in Ugwunagbo, extending to Umuojima where there was heavy gun duel between the assailants and security agents.

The source alleged that the assailants could be angry because of the unwholesome activities and treatments the security agencies especially members of the Rapid Response Team, mete out to inhabitants of Aba.

He said the assailants engaged in heavy gun duel at Umuojima with security agents which he alleged led to casualty, adding that it is a spontaneous reaction from people, maintaining that security agents in Aba should be called to order because of their actions towards residents.

The source called on the Commissioner of Police in Abia State, CP Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, to call his men to order, stressing that this could be the reason why police personnel and other security agencies are being attacked on daily basis as those they are protecting are no longer comfortable with their services due to the level of extortion being carried out by this men.

He also called on the Governor of Abia State, Dr Alex Otti, to look into security issues in Aba, saying that the activities of security agencies in Aba is becoming unpalatable to residents.

Another source said it was unknown gunmen who were enforcing sit-at-home order but met resistance from security agents which made them shoot sporadically into the air. He said it was alleged that there were people who sustained minor injuries during the gun duel.

Also speaking on the situation, a resident of Ogbor Hill, told Southeastposts.com that Aba especially on Mondays, have become so terrifying for residents. She said no Monday passes in Aba without heavy gunshots heard in the commercial nerve centre of Abia State, adding that people can no longer go to the next street for fear of stray bullets.

She alleged that the heavy tension in Aba especially on Mondays could be a political rivalry between one group or the other, calling on the Abia State Government to look into the situation with a view to unmasking those unsettling Aba residents.

Meanwhile as at the time of filing this report, it was reported that security agents blocked some major roads in Aba, especially Umuojima area in anticipation of further attacks by the assailants.
