We have Lost a Courageous, Uncompromising Igbo Leader, Bishop Onuoha Mourns Iwuanyanwu

The President and Founder, Vision Africa International, Bishop Dr. Sunday Ndukwo Onuoha, has mourned the death of elder statesman, and President General Apex Igbo Socio-Cultural Organization, Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.

The death of the elder statesman was disclosed to newsmen by the Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Alex Ogbonnia on Thursday in Enugu.

He said, “Today is a bad day for Ndigbo. It’s true! Ahaeji aga Mba is gone.

“Ohanaeze is yet to issue an official statement on the demise of our President General, Chief Iwuanyanwu, but he is gone,” he said.

Meanwhile, reacting to the death of Chief Iwuanyanwu in a statement he personally signed and issued to newsmen on Thursday evening, The Governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress, (ADC) in the 2023 Governorship election in Abia State, Bishop Dr. Sunday Ndukwo Onuoha, said Nigeria has lost a courageous, uncompromising Igbo leader and above all, a detribalised Nigerian.

He described Chief Iwuanyanwu as a great businessman, astute politician, a serious minded church man and a man who knew how to seek relationships across ethnic nationality, adding that he was a man of peace who sued for peace.

Bishop Onuoha said, “Indeed Nigeria, Igboland have lost a rare gem, one who sued for peace, ensured there was peace across board. He was a great politician who never relegated to the background, the power of negotiations in achieving a goal. He was a church man, he never failed to support the church and their programmes across board”.

The Methodist Bishop recalled his relationship with the elder statesman, saying each time he sought his opinion on pressing issues, he was always open minded, describing him as someone who respected divergent views and opinions.

The Global Peace Award Winner 2013, noted that Chief Iwuanyanwu will be greatly missed especially as the country is passing through turbulent moments, stressing that considering the important position he occupied, Chief Iwuanyanwu would have contributed immensely in varied areas of the Nigerian nation.

He commiserated with his family, Imo State Government, the people of South-East, Ohaneze Ndigbo, the Federal Government and all affected by his death, praying that those he left behind will emulate the legacies of peace, courage, serious mindedness, among other virtues.

Until his death, Iwuanyanwu aged 82, was elected the President General of the apex Igbo cultural organisation on April 20, 2023, following the death of his predecessor, Prof George Obiozor.
