Ahead the August 1st nationwide protest by a section of Nigerians under the hashtags #TinubuMustGo and #Revolution2024, The President, Vision Africa International, Bishop Dr. Sunday Ndukwo Onuoha, is of the opinion that protest is a matter of individual conviction to join or not to, adding that it is not an ethnic issue.
Recall that there has been advise by prominent individuals, organizations, for youths of various geo-political zones to squash the proposed protest, advising that miscreants may disguise to unleash mayhem on the country that is already experiencing security challenges.
Particularly in South-East geo-political zone, Igbo youths have been advised to shun the proposed protest, citing the volatile nature of the zone and how the protesters may be perceived by the Federal Government if they should join the protest.
But speaking with Southeast Post on Tuesday, Bishop Onuoha said for someone to join a protest or not is never the issue, rather, what is glaring is that there is hunger, hardship in the land which needs to be addressed quickly as well as solve household needs among others.
He said, “Protest is a matter of individual conviction to join, not an ethnic issue. An Igbo person, Yoruba or Hausa may decide to join the protest based on what he or she has passed through over the months and he is convinced that the protest will draw government attention to their plights. It is not about ethnic colorations, but the fact that the hardship in the land has taken a toll on the citizenry”.
The 2023 Governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress, (ADC), in Abia State, who recalled that he had constantly advised Government at all levels to assuage the hunger in the land, reiterated that people are not smiling because of the hardship and hunger in Nigeria.
He noted that August 1st 2024 which is the day set aside for the nationwide protest by a section of Nigerians was still far, calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to listen to various calls, advise by the citizenry and begin now to come up with strategies to mitigate the current economic realities.
The 2013 Global Peace Award Winner, emphasized that it will not be wise for the President Tinubu led federal government having heard of the proposed protest to rest on his oars and allow the protest go on as planned, urging him to begin now to give marching orders, take critical decisions that will see a revamp of the economy.
The Methodist Bishop expressed optimism that with the approval of the National Minimum Wage Bill by the Senate, setting the wage at ₦70,000, as requested by President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday, he has started looking the way of the Nigerian workers, advising him to take such decision on a larger spectrum so as to change the fortunes of the common man on the streets.
