The Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Reverend Paulinus Ezeokafor, has joined other well meaning Nigerians to call on President Bola Tinubu to cut down the cost of governance to address the economic hardship in the country.
Most Reverend Ezeokafor, who made the call while speaking with journalists in Awka, said it has become imperative for leaders in the country, starting with the President to cut down cost of running governance in the country to take care of the populace.
The cleric who commended the President Tinubu led Federal Government for increasing the minimum wage of workers to N70,000 after series of meetings with the Organised Labour, urged him to cut down the cost of governance to enable him improve the welfare of workers and the economy at large.
The Catholic Prelate, expressed joy that President Tinubu made a firm promise that the N70,000 minimum wage is to be reviewed every three years unlike what was tenable in the past, adding that it will make a positive impact on the lives of the Nigerian workers.
Bishop Ezeokafor, pointed out that N70,000 minimum wage for the nation’s workforce is manageable but cannot sustain a worker for thirty days in view of the current economic realities in Nigeria but advised President Tinubu to keep his agreement with the Organised Labour regarding reviewing the minimum wage every three years.
He lauded the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress for being courageous in fighting for the well-being of workers and advised them to suggest to the government other ways they can raise funds to meet their demands.
Bishop Ezeokafor, charged workers to shun lackadaisical attitude to work and always discharge their duties creditably to justify their pay.
