The Abia State Police Command has flagged off a 10-day Cybercrime Capacity-Building Training Workshop aimed at strengthening intelligence-led policing and tackling rising cases of cyber fraud in the state.
The training, which commenced on Monday, September 7, 2026, was declared open by the Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, psc+, mnips, JP.
It is being held in collaboration with the Cyber Shield Africa Initiative and targets the revitalisation of the Command’s Cybercrime Unit.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka.
According to the statement, participants were drawn from the Cybercrime Section, State Criminal Investigation Department, State Intelligence Bureau, and Violent Crime Response Unit Intelligence of the Command. Officers from sister agencies, including the NDLEA and NSCDC, are also participating.
Speaking at the event, CP Afolabi said the workshop aligns with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police to confront emerging crimes with modern skills rather than outdated methods.
He noted that the review of the Command’s operations showed the urgent need to strengthen its response to cybercrime.
The CP described financial and cybercrimes as among the most prevalent offences in the state, particularly in Aba, a major commercial hub where digital security is now as critical as physical safety.
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to making Abia a hostile environment for identity theft, qq, financial fraud and other cyber-related crimes.
The CP stressed that tackling such threats requires globally relevant investigative skills, hence the engagement of experts to train officers.
CP Afolabi expressed confidence that the training would enhance professionalism and efficiency in the discharge of duties.
He urged participants to remain focused and disciplined, adding that continuous training is essential because untrained personnel pose risks to themselves, the organization and the public.
The Commissioner concluded that the initiative is designed to strengthen public safety and improve overall security in Abia State.
