Army Blames IPOB Sympathisers for Undermining SE Operations

0
The Nigerian Army has accused individuals sympathetic to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) of orchestrating a social media campaign to undermine recent military operations in the South-East.
In a statement by Lt. Col. Olabisi Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations at Operation Udo Ka (OPUK) and 82 Division, the Army alleged that online posts questioning images of recovered IEDs were part of a coordinated effort to cast doubt on security operations.
The Army claimed some social media users focused on the spokesperson’s background, stirring ethnic sentiments instead of acknowledging operational gains against armed groups linked to IPOB and its militant wing, Eastern Security Network (ESN).
The controversy followed the release of images on March 12, 2026, showing IEDs recovered during Operation Eastern Sanity, targeting insurgent camps in Imo and Anambra states.
Some posts questioned the images’ authenticity, claiming they originated from other parts of the country.
The Army dismissed the claims as misinformation, explaining that geolocation details were blurred for operational security, adding that troops have dismantled several IPOB/ESN camps and IED-making facilities in the Orsu-Eketutu area.
The Army alleged some IPOB sympathisers manipulated metadata to falsely suggest recoveries were made in Lagos and Oyo states.
It also called on interested parties to arrange to inspect recovered materials at the 82 Division HQ.
The Army reaffirmed its professional, multi-ethnic character and urged Nigerians to avoid sharing unverified information online, warning that misinformation can undermine security operations.
