Mandela Obasi, the lawmaker representing Ohafia North State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Labour Party (LP), the ruling party in Abia State.
Obasi announced his decision after a closed-door meeting with Governor Alex Otti, citing the governor’s performance as the reason.
He stated that Otti’s development agenda has made it easier for politicians to engage with their constituents, pointing to visible projects across Abia, including roads and other initiatives in his constituency and community.
Obasi attributed his defection to internal wrangling within the PDP, which he said had left the party without clear leadership direction.
He expressed optimism that his supporters and associates would join him in the LP, noting that his political structure remains strong in the constituency.
The lawmaker praised Otti’s projects, saying they extend to rural communities, not just major towns. “The good work of the governor is visible across Abia,” Obasi said, adding that such achievements make things easier for politicians seeking the people’s mandate.
