Southeastposts can authoritatively confirm that an early morning fire on Sunday, gutted Umunnachi section of the age-long popular Aforigwe Market, Umudioka community, in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra, destroying  property worth millions of naira.

‎The Fire Chief of the Anambra Fire Service, Mr Chukwudi Chiketa who made this known on Sunday in Onitsha, added that the possible cause of the fire could be from an electric spark, resulting  from restored power to the affected building.

‎According to him, the inferno started around 2 am but quick intervention of men of the fire service prevented it from spreading to adjourning buildings.

‎Sources, said that officials of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, also stormed the market that is located along the Old Onitsha-Awka road, to disconnect cables to avoid electrocution.

‎They also listed the shops affected to include those for shoes, provisions, bread depots, and  electrical appliances among others.
